Benefit Change may mean financial help for certain eye conditions.

The DWP has recently extended its support for people suffering from specific eye-related conditions; anyone eligible could receive up to £5,644.60 a year.

The change in policy may be particularly beneficial for anyone suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that typically affects individuals over the age of 50.

Those diagnosed with AMD can now apply for a PIP – Personal Independence Payment – which will help cover the costs of living with the condition and expenses for any support required.

Under the new system, people will receive between £72.65 and £108.55 a week to help support them.

What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD is a condition that blurs your vision and is caused by aging. It does not lead to complete blindness, but it can significantly impair a person's ability to see clearly, affecting activities such as driving, cooking, and reading. AMD results in low vision, meaning that glasses or contact lenses are less effective, which can be quite debilitating.

AMD is a progressive illness; it can deteriorate over time, potentially necessitating additional help with daily tasks. Symptoms include a mild blurring of vision, straight lines appearing distorted, or colors seeming dull.

How to claim benefits for AMD

As AMD is now classified as a condition for which people can receive PIP, you’ll need to contact the DWP to apply for this.

Complete a PIP1 form, as well as a 'How your disability affects you' document, and receive a medical assessment. Staff at the DWP can assist you with completing the forms if your condition makes it difficult.

You can also call the PIP claim line using these two numbers – telephone: 0800 917 2222 and textphone: 0800 917 7777.

Contacting the DWP by post may make the process longer.

It can take up to six months for the DWP to make a decision and send you your first payment.

After retirement age, PIP turns into Attendance Allowance (and you can only be eligible for one at a time). For this you can apply online.

If you are concerned about your vision give us a call.

If you have been diagnosed with AMD or have a relative or friend with AMD, more information can be found at the Macuar Society
